The job
The Clinical Coding Manager is accountable for the strategy and development of Healthcode’s coding related systems and services. You’ll be passionate about coding, be an Accredited Clinical Coder and have leadership qualities with enthusiasm and drive to motivate our team of coders.
You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of the coding staff with a view to the smooth running of the department to meet monthly deadlines. You should have proven ability to prioritise, plan, organise your workload and work under pressure. You need to be a highly organised and experienced manager, with a strong interest in quality management, development and excellence in service delivery.
Key accountabilities
- Accountable for the coding strategy
- Have monthly 1-2-1s with your team members and create individual and team objectives
- Ensure all customer cases are responded to within SLA, working these yourself where needed
- Strong management and leadership to ensure workload is evenly distributed and the team are multiskilled
- Support and train colleagues in clinical coding-related matters
- Educate customers and internal staff on how coding works and the principles of coding
- Ensure all coding-related processes are updated
- Ensure the integrity of the coding process
- Assess the market and keep up to date with external coding affairs
- Publish coding standards on behalf of the company
- Lead the ongoing development of the Healthcode ISC classification and liaise with customers about new code development
- Analyse generic clinical code sets for EMR/EHR systems
- Analyse and support pharmacy code sets e.g. dm+d and BNF
- Map clinical terminologies to clinical codes across several classifications including OPCS, CCSD, ICD10, ICD9, Healthcode ISCs and other more standard/global systems, such as SNOMED
- Map clinical codes to genders, anatomical classifications and specialties
- Understand how customers’ codes are mapped and standardised, handling customer support issues and producing customer analysis and reports
- Ensure provider charge master mappings are maintained and developed
- Work closely with the product owners on implementation of clinical code sets
- Support coding development and standardsfor business intelligence and reporting programmes
- Plan and chair customer coding workshops
- Support the re-write of the claims clearing service
- Support cross mappings of code sets
- Build and maintain a coding data dictionary and be responsible for the standards, distribution and publication
- Keep up with the maintenance and standardisation of Healthcode code sets
- Evaluate available code sets and classifications to determine current and future suitability
- Attend customer and insurer meetings where coding related topics need discussing
- Support ongoing development of Healthcode’s coding-related systems and services, identifying opportunities for product enhancements and developments
- Advise customers and internal teams on the best codes to use
- Contract management between providers and insurers
Person specifications
Qualifications and experience
- Educated to degree level or recognised equivalent
- National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC)
- Proven managerial experience of a clinical coding team
- High-level customer service experience
- Experience of implementing, reviewing and undertaking a structured coding audit programme and the writing of audit reports
- Experience with CRM systems – Salesforce (desirable)
- Clinical coding knowledge and experience
- Understanding of operational procedures and QA process standards
- Advanced knowledge of complex medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
- Proven expertise and specialist knowledge in the application of the rules and conventions of ICD-10 and OPCS-4

- Ability to use all required Microsoft tools effectively
